Inspiring insights into a career "from the gut"

On January 14, Prof. Dr.-Ing Christian Hartz welcomed our department for his lecture, which gave the numerous students and other guests an insight into his professional career and personal life story.

Prof. Dr. Hartz began his lecture with a personal journey into his youth. Growing up in East Germany, the fall of the Berlin Wall left its mark on him and turned his path upside down: the career path he had been on became abruptly uncertain. Despite these upheavals, Prof. Dr. Hartz decided to study civil engineering at the TU Berlin.

His career took on an international dimension. He worked at SAP for six years before joining the architectural firm SOM in Chicago. Together with his family, he spent several years in the USA before an appointment at TU Dortmund University finally brought him back to Germany in 2019. Since then, he has been a permanent member of the department's teaching staff.

Prof. Dr. Hartz emphasized that he had never written a traditional application in his entire career. The decisive opportunities had "fallen to him". He had always made his professional decisions based on his gut feeling - and in the long term, these decisions had always been the best of his life.

To conclude, Prof. Dr. Hartz addressed the students directly: "If you don't really stand behind what you're doing, it's no good."

After the lecture, a cozy finale with a buffet and drinks provided an opportunity for conversation.

The department would like to thank Prof. Dr. Hartz for this open and personal insight into his career and for the valuable impulses.
