COMING. Lecture by Prof. Dr. Madeo

In her presentation, Prof. Madeo showed that metamaterial structures with identical dispersion properties, but finite size, exhibit very different vibration behavior compared to theoretically infinitely large specimens. This effect is significantly influenced by the design of the cut surfaces.
The focus was on how material and free cut surfaces control the local displacement fields and global vibration damping and what potentials arise for the performance of metamaterials through targeted cut surface design.
Prof. Madeo heads the Chair of Structural Mechanics at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at TU Dortmund University. In her work, which is supported by the ERC Consolidator Grant "META-LEGO" from the European Research Council, among others, she is investigating how mechanical metamaterials can be best represented in modeling with extended continuum models.
Another focus of her scientific commitment is the international Master's degree course "Mechanics of Sustainable Materials and Structures (MS²)", which she is in charge of coordinating. The course is offered jointly with the University of Trento (Italy) and the École Centrale de Nantes (France) and was recently awarded the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's grant.
Following the lecture, the participants took the opportunity to chat with the lecturer and each other over drinks and light snacks.
