Churches concern us all!

Churches shape cities and offer space for community. The event on February 24, 2025 at the Baukunstarchiv NRW in Dortmund will discuss their significance and future.

Churches and their furnishings are among the most important examples of cultural heritage in Europe. Church buildings play an important role in urban development, they are anchor points in the neighborhood. As a rule, church buildings have been erected and preserved with the diverse and also financial participation of the community and civil society. They carry memories, form points of reference and provide a sense of home, also for people who are new to the neighborhoods. Provided they are open, they are spaces that offer a wide range of potential: as meeting places for democracy, as cooling rooms in the face of climate change, as "fourth places" that are spaces for experiencing spirituality across religions and denominations, and much more. Anyone who views these buildings today solely as private commercial real estate is robbing the communitas. Churches, the state and society cannot and must not shirk their historically founded responsibility for this cultural heritage.

The event will take place on Monday, February 24, 2025 at 6.30 pm in the Gartensaal, Baukunstarchiv NRW, Ostwall 7, 44135 Dortmund
